The Basic Survey Skills course familiarizes students with the fundamentals of surveying, which are required as a prerequisite for the Level I. Applied Fluvial Geomorphology course. Students will use surveying techniques to collect, analyze, and record physical stream data; specifically, students will learn how to:

  • Set up and use a laser and sight level
  • Survey with differential leveling and turning points
  • Create a sketch map; survey a stream cross-section
  • Conduct a longitudinal profile of the channel
  • Conduct pebble counts
  • Record and analyze the collected data
